New Opportunities for Young People at Sheffield Music Hub
New Opportunities for Young People at Sheffield Music Hub
This year, Sheffield Music Hub has launched an exciting new initiative to give young people the chance to get involved in our concerts in a whole new way—behind the scenes!
We’re passionate about helping young people develop lifelong skills and explore career pathways in the music and events industry. We have offered hands-on roles such as technical crew, lighting operator, Audio-Visual operator, stage manager, front-of-house manager, and more.
After a fantastic response to our call for applications, we’re thrilled to announce nine successful young people who will be taking on these roles at our upcoming Spring Gala Concert. The roles are:
- Technical Assistants x2
- Lighting Assistant
- Audio-Visual Assistant
- Stage Management Assistants x2
- Front of House Assistant
- Assistant Photographer
- Comms/Social Media Assistant
Each young person will work closely with our experienced staff in the lead-up to and during the Gala Concert. For example:
The Technical Assistants will train with Robert Whitehead, our Music Technician, learning how to set up microphones and even carrying out a live recording of our senior choir, Concordia Voices!
The Comms/Social Media Assistant will collaborate with Rory Evans to attend rehearsals, interview musicians, and create engaging video content for social media to build hype for the event.
The young people will also visit the Octagon Centre to walk through the plans for the Gala Concert, gaining valuable insight into event logistics and management.
This project is about equipping young people with practical experience in roles related to event planning, event delivery, technical production, and event communications, all of which are essential skills for careers in the music and arts industries.
Why We Started This Project
One of the strongest messages from Voice for Youth, our youth-led initiative shaping the future of music education in Sheffield, was:
Young people want to be more involved—not just on stage, but in planning and delivering events.
We have listened and responded by offering real-world roles that empower our young people.
What has happened so far
Last week, we held an introductory meeting with all the successful applicants, our projects team Kelly Dwyer, Lucie Timm and Rory Evans, Inclusion Lead Heather Burge, and Music Technician Robert Whitehead. Kelly walked everyone through how the Gala Concert runs regarding timings and logistics on the day, and the young people met the staff they’ll be working alongside.
We’re proud to be creating opportunities that inspire, educate, and prepare the next generation for exciting careers in music and events. Watch this space for updates as we count down to the Gala Concert!
