Any Instrument welcome!

The aim of Sheffield Senior Jazz Collective is to find your own voice as a jazz improviser whilst learning some of the standard (and not-so-standard) jazz repertoire. Although the main focus of the group is improvisation, we also work on ensemble playing within a small-group setting.

Our rehearsals focus on the key skills of jazz performance: improvisation, collaboration, creative performance ideas, and honing our all-round musicianship. Students are encouraged to take a lead in decisions about how we perform the pieces – you aren’t just told what to do each week! You will help to design the arrangements of the music you are playing, making decisions about introductions, endings, and different grooves. We love to be creative and inventive whilst still taking time to learn about the history of what has come before.

Sometimes we might play a piece of music written 80 years ago, and at other times music written within the last few years. We have had a number of students from the group go on to study jazz at conservatoires, and the group provides a brilliant grounding for wherever your musical journey takes you next.
