Sheffield Youth Big Band is the group for any student who loves jazz and wants to play in one of the top Sheffield jazz ensembles! We play all types of jazz from 1950s swing, 70s funk to contemporary jazz.
Big Band takes students from Y7-Y13, and we suggest an entry level of Grade 5 (however you don't need to have taken this exam). Having an ability to read music is a must, as we play a lot of different charts; being able to improvise is a bonus, but not essential. We audition members before they join.
Big band is for students looking for a fun and relaxed ensemble, but still want a challenge and push themselves musically. We have around 3-4 gigs per year, with gigs as part of the music hub calendar and gigs in venues around the city. There are also some joint gigs with other big bands around the area in the works too.
