Gillian Hume - Music Hub Manager

Hi, I’m Gillian and I’m Manager at Sheffield Music Hub.  I’m one of 4 siblings and grew up in Sheffield attending Ecclesall Primary School and then Silverdale and Highstorrs school. I started learning the piano at 7 and clarinet aged 8. I sang and played in every possible group at school and those run by Sheffield Music Service. I have many happy memories of attending the summer courses run at what is now All Saints Catholic High school – the school hall remains unchanged! I was a founder member of the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra and played with superstars such as the pianist John Lill.

I studied music at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester serving a year as Student Union President. I worked in a variety of roles in Stage and Orchestral Management and as a Peripatetic teacher in many schools in Cheshire before completing my teaching qualification at Bretton Hall in Wakefield.

After working as a Primary classroom teacher and music specialist at schools in outer London and then Derbyshire I settled down to raise a family and concentrate on private teaching as well as working as the Administrator for Sheffield Singing School.

In 2014 I became a Woodwind Music Leader at Sheffield Music Hub and moved into the role of Manager in 2022. Music and education is my life; I passionately want to ensure all Sheffield children have the musical opportunities I had growing up.

Some things about me...

  • Favourite Song / Piece of Music: There are so many pieces I love listening to that it’s very hard to choose.  My top classical pick has to be Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto but I also love the Beatles and The Carpenters.
  • Favourite thing to do outside of work: Spending time with my family – days out, walking, gardening, cooking and sharing food; I have 3 adult children and 3 grandchildren and a very loyal cockerpoo.
  • Favourite Food: I love all types of curries, especially Bhunas
  • Favourite Place in Sheffield: The walk down from Burbage Rocks and through Padley Gorge – the views are breathtaking and the river so much fun to paddle in.
  • One thing about me that would surprise you: I have been to No. 10 Downing Street and had tea with Tony Blair.
