Summer 2020 performance (featuring intermediate/advanced players): Bring Down the Birds

Our overarching aim is to empower students to explore collaborative and creative music making and encourage our students to take ownership of the music they create and play. Explore the finer art of Jazz improvisation in a band setting, no experience of improvisation required but musicians must be able to play to an upper intermediate/advanced level. While there is no need to have completed any grades, Grade 5 and above is a good indication of the skills required for this ensemble. If you would like more information around the skills required to take part in this group, please contact Travis Finch.

Other opportunities for players from the Advanced SYJC:

  • Additional rehearsal with our Intermediate SYJC ensemble in a mentoring capacity, helping guide less experienced players. In addition to providing a valuable opportunity to hone their own musical skills, this can also serve as a great activity for awards like the Duke of Edinburgh.
    • Timings/location: 7.00-7.45 on Wednesdays at Mercia
  • Players are invited to register their interest in taking part in the Sheffield Youth Big Band
    • Timings/location: 7.00-8.15 on Wednesdays at Mercia

We cover a range of styles that fall under the umbrella of Jazz- if you are interested in learning more about what we do at Jazz, here is a lead sheet for Sonnymoon For Two for C, Bb and Eb instruments. The lead sheet has the chords and melody for the main tune as well as scales and chord tones that can be used in soloing. Also, see links for a performance from Sonny Rollins as well as a play along backing track."
