John Lyon (Strings)

I’m originally from Buxton, but don’t let that put you off, Sheffield is where it’s at. I teach violin,  direct our Music Hub Senior Orchestra, and create musical arrangements and compositions for the exciting projects we do here. I also work across the country as a conductor of symphony orchestras and opera productions, as well as preparing music for publishing companies, and playing the violin and choral singing whenever I can (usually not at the same time). Music is about communication and sharing a bit of our souls in whatever form that takes. If you'd love to learn to play the violin, I would absolutely love to teach you, because the most important thing is that you want to do it. I have close relationships with all my students and we’re all different so I tailor my approach to you. We always work hard and have high expectations because you’ll quickly get to know the mantra of ‘get your joy out of doing a great job’. The real goal is that music is the vehicle we’ll use to help you become a beautiful, well-rounded, empathic person.

Some things about me!

  • Favourite song/piece of music – whatever I’m listening to or playing right now.
  • Favourite thing to do outside of work – Slow cooker on -> food in -> go for a walk in the Peaks -> return -> feast.
  • Favourite food – CURRY
  • Favourite place in Sheffield – You mean apart from the Music Hub? Meersbrook park , for the amazing view of the city.
  • One thing about me that would surprise you to know - when you see those whacky waving inflatable tube people at car washes, they were actually modelled on me.
