Celia Hurwitz-Keefe (Strings)
Originally from the United States of America, Celia has undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in music from Carleton College (BA), Indiana University (MMus) and Columbia University (PhD). She studied cello with Helga Winold and Tsuyoku Tsutsumi at Indiana University (MMus) and, as an American study-abroad student, with Douglas Cummings at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She joined the team at Sheffield Music Hub in 2012.
Celia has lectured in musicology and music analysis for the Open University, the University of Sheffield, and the Queens University, Belfast, and served as an editor for the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, revised edition. She returned to cello after her time as an academic because she missed the unique pleasure of making music with other people. She tries to make personal enjoyment a priority in her lessons, aiming to facilitate a learning environment in which working and playing go hand-in-hand.
In addition to her musical activities, she loves to read, go to the theatre and walk in the countryside with her family.
