Sheffield Music Academy Keep the Music Playing with 26.2 Hour Music Marathon
Saturday 11th July 10am – Sunday 12th July 12:12pm

Sheffield Music Academy (SMA) are currently in training for their most ambitious concert yet – a 26.2-hour digital stream of music performance videos from students past and present, staff, parents, friends, and professional musicians across the region. We wanted to give our students the opportunity to showcase their hard work and achievements, which normally would have resulted in an end of term concert at Sheffield Cathedral in July.

Since this is not possible we have adapted with the times to ensure our students’ hard work is still celebrated. Since moving our teaching online at the end of March, SMA have seen the incredible dedication from its students, staff, and parents, and are thrilled to be sharing this with the wider community. The marathon will bring together our thriving community from across the country as they work together towards a common goal. The non-stop stream will consist of uplifting, life-affirming classical, folk, and jazz pieces to celebrate the power of music.

To train for this mammoth marathon in July, SMA launched a Midweek Concert series on YouTube, which gives a taste of what is to come. In times like these it can be easy to lose the feeling of community, so we are thrilled to be offer this platform for performance our hard-working cohort. During this process our students have learned how to record videos, present themselves on camera and adapt to a new way of performing. The marathon will be an even bigger challenge, but one we are excited to meet!

SMA Musical Director, Martin Cropper, said: “We’re thrilled to be bringing our community together with this ambitious project. Making music is at the heart of what we do and to connect musicians from the Sheffield region and beyond is going to be really special.”

As a small music education charity, SMA hope that the Music Marathon will encourage new audiences and help raise vital funds lost during lockdown. Please consider helping us by: -
