The Indoor Music Games is a new series of band contests which brings together musical ensembles of all styles and from different backgrounds in a friendly environment, with entertaining performances which are enjoyable for both participants and spectators. There is a particular focus on getting young people involved and so IMG is suitable for youth, training and unregistered bands

SpringFest 2019, incorporating IMG South Yorkshire will take place on Saturday 13th April in the Lady Mabel Hall, Ecclesfield School, Chapeltown Road, Ecclesfield, Sheffield S35 9WD. The event was last held in this venue in 2018 and attracted bands from all over the UK including Scotland. The venue includes ample parking, refreshment and changing facilities and is easily accessed from the M1. The event will begin at 2pm and  should be finished by 6pm, depending on the number of entries. There is a stage 8.4 metres wide x 6.3 metres deep and a floor-level performance area 13.4 metres wide x 7.7 metres deep.  Bands may use either or both areas for their performance.

The 2019 event will be hosted by Concord Youth Music and will feature 4 sections as follows:-

Concert Class

The Concert Class section is run in a similar manner to a traditional brass band contest. Each band will play for up to 20 minutes, sat down, in a configuration of their own choosing and any instrumentation is permitted. The adjudication is carried out by two judges, one looking at musical performance and the other judging entertainment.

This section is aimed primarily at unregistered, youth and training bands. Each band will be awarded a Bronze, Silver or Gold award and there will also be a prize for the overall winners.

Music Ensemble class

The Music Ensemble class is suitable for groups that stand up during their performance but do not include movement. The adjudication is carried out by two judges, one looking at musical performance and the other judging entertainment.

Shows are a minimum of 5 minutes with a maximum of 12 minutes. The winner of the Music Ensemble class is the group with the best aggregated medal achievement.

WGI Percussion Class

Under an agreement with Winterguard International, the Percussion Freestyle class is for percussion groups; both static ensembles and those that choose to move.  Groups are assessed by three accredited judges who allocate points based on three categories respectively:-

  • Music Performance
  • Visual Performance
  • Overall Impression

 WGI Winds (Music & Movement)

The Music and Movement class is suitable for groups that combine their music performance with co-ordinated movement (e.g. marching, dancing, choreography).  Groups are assessed by three accredited judges who allocate points based on three categories respectively:-

  • Music Performance
  • Movement Performance
  • Overall Impression

Youth Groups

Groups that have members who are all 18 or under on 01/02/2019, will compete for an additional award as best junior group in each class. This competition runs in parallel to the main competition and with the same score levels. In the event of a tie for first place the group with the highest Entertainment or Overall Impression score shall win.

Finale

At the conclusion of the contest all bands reassemble on the arena for the announcement of results.  Last year’s event also saw a series of impromptu (un-adjudicated) “encores” by those competitors who elected to do so. Any “guest” performers will also be invited to entertain at this point.

The Finale will include the announcement of results where a member from each band is asked to come to the front of the arena to receive their prize. After the results, the event concludes with the a playing the National Anthem by all those who wish to participate (musical arrangements will be sent out before the event).
