Music Study Day (For Y11 & Y12 Students)
Wondering what it's like studying music at university? Spend a day as a 1st year student at Sheffield and find out! Our Department of Music warmly invites you to a free 'Music Study Day', taking place here at the University of Sheffield on Monday 25 June, 9.30am - 3.30pm.
The event is designed to give students a taste of what university-level study in music is like, challenging them to work creatively with unfamiliar topics and approaches in a discursive small-group teaching environment. Following a brief introduction, participants will select from a menu of workshops (both academic and practical) led by the Department's academic staff on the following topics:
- The Broadway musical: from the archive to the theatre
- Experiments to examine the musical brain
- Tradition v Technology: Folk music in the digital age
- Navigating the music industries
- Sound synthesis using free software
- Performance masterclass
- Composition workshop
Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Please note: places are limited, so we would advise you to book early. We expect participants to engage with the full programme of events, from the 9.30am start until 3.30pm close and ask that they make their travel arrangements around these times. Teachers are welcome to accompany their group (equally, we are happy for pupils to attend unaccompanied).
To book places please use the online registration form.
They hope to inspire participants to carry their music studies through to the next level. Please note: the event follows a different format to an Open Day and will not involve a full recruitment 'pitch'. Students considering applying to study music at university should seek to attend Open Days in addition.
