Support Young Musicians across Sheffield – Become the Friends and Volunteers Secretary
Sheffield Music Hub’s Friends and Volunteers group is looking for a new Secretary to join their charity committee and help support the young people of Sheffield.
This is an exciting time to join the charity, with the volunteer team expanding rapidly. They now have over 40 volunteers, including 20 new recruits in the last few years and three new trustees joining in 2026. This dedicated team raises vital funds and provides hands‑on support for music groups across Sheffield.
How the Friends and Volunteers Support Sheffield's Young Musicians
Sheffield Music Hub supports children and young people across Sheffield, ensuring every child - regardless of background, postcode, family income, SEND status, or care status - can access a high‑quality, inclusive music education. The Hub removes financial barriers through a comprehensive bursary programme for families on Free School Meals, Universal Credit and low incomes; dedicated SEND bursaries offering additional tailored tuition; and fully funded provision for looked‑after children, covering lessons, instrument hire, group memberships and holiday courses.
The Friends and Volunteers play a vital role in sustaining these programmes, raising over £7,000 a year specifically for bursary support. Without their work, many young people would not have access to the musical opportunities they deserve.
Their support also helps us provide exciting and impactful musical experiences that would otherwise be impossible. For example:
- They funded £698 for a coach to transport the Firth Park Community Brass Band to the National Youth Brass Band Championships - helping over 50 young players travel to Hull for an unforgettable day.
- They donated £243 to hire space for the Inspire and Play day with the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra, bringing together musicians who had been playing for just one year with others who had played for over fifty.
Their support directly enriches the lives of young people across Sheffield. Without the Friends and Volunteers, much of this work could not happen.
A New Secretary Needed
After four years in the role, the current Secretary, Sue, is stepping down. The charity now needs a new trustee to take on this position. Without a Secretary, the Friends and Volunteers group would no longer be able to operate - putting the charity’s essential support for young musicians at risk.
Secretary Role
Trustees collectively make decisions on behalf of the charity, overseeing its work and ensuring it operates legally and effectively. Trustees meet twice per term, either in person or online, with occasional additional meetings.
The Secretary is responsible for:
- Organising committee meetings
- Taking meeting minutes
- Managing the charity’s email account
- Supporting the Chair in coordinating the volunteer team
- Helping gather volunteers for Sheffield Music Hub events
This is a brilliant opportunity for anyone interested in developing new skills, coordinating fundraising activities, or sharing their expertise to support a much‑loved local charity.
